I had the opportunity to hear Dan Cathy, COO of Chick-Fil-A speak at a business breakfast, and he actually requested that the audience patronize McDonald's. I admire Chick-Fil-A, their corporate culture and values.
McDonalds's is actually a competitor in some of the food products that Chick-Fil-A sells. This is mostly in chicken, but they also compete in many of the same geographic markets.
Dan is a Christian man and the philosophy of Chick-Fil-A is a great one that espouses service to each other, being supportive in the work place and to forgive, to name a few corporate qualities. That by the way is what we believe as well.
But the reasons for supporting McDonald’s is that they serve a higher purpose. You see, McDonald’s has the largest lobbying group for restaurants. Larger than the National Restaurant Association. The McDonald’s lobbying infrastructure helps to protect the restaurant industry, which includes Chick-Fil-A from activists, eco/green environmentalist, animal rights groups etc.
Not that these groups don’t have a valid concern in whatever position/opinion they are voicing to the masses, but the greater good for the restaurant industry is to support McDonald’s even though they may be a direct competitor. Buy doing so, Chick-Fil-A is allowed to grow, employ people and implement a Christian value system in the workplace.
So it benefits them to be supportive of McDonalds. I happen to like both of them, but when I eat a burger at Mickey D’s, it will have a new meaning for me.
So go get a Mc'd's burger and Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich.
